The fusion matches or surpasses its japanese competitors in various quality surveys, and leads the class in fuel economy. How times have changed.  the fusion competes with the toyota camry, honda accord, chevrolet malibu, hyundai sonata and several other very good cars, and holds its own with any of them. All the ford fusion powerplants are competitive in power output and technological features, and all deliver impressive fuel economy. Even the lower-trim fusion models are smooth and quiet. The 2011 fusion hybrid delivers the highest epa mileage ratings of any midsize car: 41/36 mpg city/highway.  all-wheel drive is available for the fusion, a rarity among midsize sedans.  the fusion fits a range of budgets. The base car comes reasonably well equipped and with the optional 6-speed automatic transmission just cracks $20,000. Ford's voice-activated sync system, which easily pairs phones and audio devices with the car, is an inexpensive option on lower-trim models. High-trim fusions offer excellent, high-power sony audio, a sumptuous leather interior package, advanced electronic systems like blind-spot warning and one of the easiest-operating navigation systems anywhere.  nicely enhanced with chrome, the fusion looks muscular and crisp, with more than a hint of euro panache.  fusion comfortably seats five. All-new, next-generation models are smooth and quiet. introductiontotally redesigned, the 2012 ford focus looks, feels, and smells like the future. It makes its claim as the technology and fuel-mileage leader in the compact car class, a crowded and competitive field full of good cars with base prices in the $16,000-$17,000 range: volkswagen jetta, chevrolet cruze, honda civic, toyota corolla, subaru impreza, hyundai elantra, mazda3, mitsubishi lancer, kia forte.  but the focus is a mixed bag of function. The new 2. 0-liter engine is super smooth, but the new 6-speed automatic transmission shifts at quirky times. The fabric seats are super, the interior materials excellent and the wraparound cockpit cozy, but there isn't much rear legroom.  focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. It's lower, longer and wider. The new focus hatchback model is especially aerodynamic looking. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, 6-speed automatic optional, with selectshift manual mode an option to the optional transmission. The engine makes 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque, an increase over last year's engine. It's plenty powerful, but mostly, it's extremely smooth. That's what a driver will feel: 'man, this car is smoooth.'  we observed fuel economy in the mid-20s when we were driving the focus. Fuel economy figures from the u. Federal government were not available when this was written.  there's excellent legroom in front, but compared to the previous focus, ford has somehow lost 2. 9 inches of legroom in the rear, despite stretching the length of the car by 3. 5 inches. The importance of rear legroom appears to have been discounted here.  interior noise was definitely not discounted, however. The focus is a compact car with the nvh qualities of a full-size car. A lot of productive effort went into making the cabin silent, with sound insulation. Powertrain noise has also been reduced, by attentive engineering of the new engine, transmission, and chassis.  myford touch powered by sync is the connectivity system that ford is touting with its new cars. The driver uses three senses: see, hear, touch. Ford says the system is designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver, and maybe it is designed that way, but that doesn't mean it works that way. We struggled with it. And we think all this technology can distract drivers from the important task of driving.  the gauges that are in front of the driver's eyes are easy to read: big tach and speedo with cool blue needles, fuel and engine temp between them, and easy-to-read digital info above the fuel and temp. The focus ride is good, with a suspension that's on the soft side, which doesn't help precise turning. We also drove a focus se with the 5-speed manual transmission and sport-tuned suspension. An optional sport package features firmer suspension tuning and selectshift.  focus sel sedan 20,070) and hatchback 21,065) upgrade over se with dual-zone climate control, a six-speaker sound system, 12-volt power for rear seat, piano black grille, chrome beltline trim, ambient lighting, overhead console, metallic interior trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, 60/40 rear seats, 16-inch painted aluminum wheels, myford touch handsfree driver connect, sync elements with usb port, cruise control and rear disc brakes. Active grille shutters block airflow to the radiator when it's not required, which improves aerodynamics and fuel mileage. Nascar racers did this with cardboard and duct tape for years, but now it's fully electronic; the shutters have 15 different positions, based on engine temperature. Other cars such as the new chevrolet cruze are doing it, as well.  ford calls the distinctive grille split trapezoid. There are eight thin horizontal bars in a huge-mouthed trapezoid whose wide side is the bottom and is divided into three segments by two body-colored vertical bars like catfish chin whiskers. It looks better than it sounds, balanced by a horizontal opening above it, with one thin chrome bar and a neat blue ford oval. The long thin trapezoidish headlamps wrap forward and downward from the cheeks of the car. They're like sweeping dragon's eyes, says ford in their best metaphor yet.  sculpted lines at the sills and door handles flow back from neat modest flared front fenders to give the focus a forward-moving slant: kinetic design energy, ford calls it. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. The side window outline is shaped like a picture of smoke traveling over a sleek car in a wind tunnel. Big vertical taillamps are nice and safe and volvo-like.  the focus se looks cleaner, we think, lacking chrome beltline trim. The 17-inch titanium wheels are multi-spoke wagon wheels, better looking than the optional 18-inch wheels that are like big chrome stars with thin prongs.  the all-new focus chassis is 30 percent stiffer. It uses a crash structure designed for the larger taurus. More than 55 percent is high-strength steels, including boron b-pillars and front beam, and a decoupling powertrain cradle to keep the engine out of the cabin in a head-on crash. interiorford has been very ambitious the last few years, engineering-wise, and it shows. It shows in the interior of the focus. It's as if they took everything on their to-do list, and stuffed it in the cockpit. It's as busy as they are.  but ambition is good. Because ford went all-out with the new focus interior, there are some great things, starting with the standard seats in sturdy fabric, and the leather-like seats in the sel. Too bad the new chevrolet cruze doesn't have seats like the focus; if its interior matched its great handling and engine, there might be a good gm-ford battle in an important segment. Oh, it's good anyhow.  the word cockpit when used with a car is an awkward fit. But not with the focus. That was the way it was designed, to feel like a cockpit. With all its bells and whistles, geeks will love it, drivin' down the highway feelin' like a pilot, all those switches right nearby, led ambient lighting in a choice of seven colors to suit his or her mood, controls that feel like they wrap around to the elbows on the centerstack, displays to set and adjust with dials and buttons, readouts to read and scroll through, maps to follow, touch-screens to touch, voi. But ford's new flagship is larger and more substantial and comes with much more standard equipment.  the five hundred boasts a body structure and safety technology developed by volvo and first used on volvo's s80 luxury sedan and then for its highly acclaimed xc90 sport utility vehicle. Ford acquired the swedish automaker famous for its passenger-protecting innovations in 1999. When it came time to develop the five hundred (and its upscale cousin, the mercury montego), ford imported volvo's best structural and safety engineers to work on the project. The five hundred is available with a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the latter giving it more stable handling and better traction, particularly in inclement weather.  ford developed the five hundred as a successor to the taurus and to compete with cars such as the brand new chrysler 300, the venerable toyota avalon, and the aging chevrolet impala. The driver sits relatively high, and the roomy front seats offer a commanding view of the road. Back-seat passengers will not complain about being cramped, either. The back seats fold down to increase cargo capacity. The six-speed automatic transmission that comes standard helps the engine deliver responsive performance and good fuel economy. All-wheel-drive models come with a continually variable transmission that performs the same feat. lineupthe ford five hundred is available in three trim levels: se, sel, and limited.  each is powered by a 3. 0-liter v6 called the duratec 30, which is tuned to provide 203 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. That power flows through either of two very effective transmissions. Also available are a safety and security package for the se with side and canopy airbags, anti-theft perimeter alarm and lights and a safety package for the sel and limited with the side and canopy airbags. walkaroundford first used the five hundred designation in numerical form on the highest trim version of its 1957 fairlane model and the car helped ford overtake chevrolet in the sales race. When ford launched a new flagship, the galaxie, in 1959, it again used the '500' badge to indicate the most upscale version. It also rides on a wheelbase that is 4. 5 inches longer, which not only gives the car its solid, luxury-car stance but enhances smooth ride quality.  the chief designer says it was a challenge to sculpt a ford-styled body around a volvo chassis, and adds that designers used what he calls 'plainer surfaces with taut lines' to give the car a modern look without losing its passenger car proportions. The five hundred's rounded forms offer a definite alternative to the more upright, angular chrysler 300.  the five hundred's face has large, jewel-styled and multi-bulb triangular headlight elements on either side of a wide, trapezoidal grille. Chrome accents the front edges of the bumper. There are similar chrome accents on the rear bumper and another that bisects the doors and provides a visual bridge between slightly flared wheel arches. Chrome also frames the side windows, which include large third windows that give the five hundred more of a luxury car profile.  the tall trunk lid has a spoiler-like lip along its top trailing edge. Those who need even more space for people and cargo can opt for the freestyle, a crossover wagon based on the five hundred. Those who want a smaller and less expensive vehicle will next year be able to get the fusion, another mid-size sedan that's smaller than the taurus. interioralthough the 2005 ford five hundred's exterior is a foot shorter than the full-size ford crown victoria sedan, the new car has nearly as much passenger room (107. 1 cubic feet for the five hundred vs. 108. 2 for the crown vic). The five hundred also has a larger trunk (21. 1 cu. The center stack has audio controls at the top with climate and other controls beneath. The dashboard has either silver or wood-grain trim with metal used for the door releases and around the base and top of the gear shift lever. We found the switchgear well designed and easy to use.  one cautionary note (well, actually two of them): a steeply raked windshield can reflect a lot of glare off the top of the dashboard (at least it did in the car we drove with a tan-colored 'pebble' interior; 'shale' and 'black' interiors also are available), and a driver wearing sunglasses can have trouble reading the darkly colored gauges in the se and sel models. Some people, including us, like the aggressive, angular look of the fusion, some don't. We'd like to note that polarizing designs are often more successful than bland designs that neither offend nor excite anyone. In short, we think this is a good-looking car.  the styling features large headlights and a bold grille. Three thick chrome bars across the grille have a razor-like appearance and make the car look more upmarket than its pricing might suggest. The front bumper almost disappears as there are two chrome strips below it that match the ones on the grille.  when the fusion was first introduced, ford executives said its three-bar horizontal grille would become the signature styling cue for ford cars. Since then it has been seen on concept vehicles, as well as the edge crossover vehicle and the new taurus and newly restyled focus. A fold along the top edges of the front fenders runs all the way back along the edge of the roof to the rear deck.  the fusion features a wide track, which makes it stand out on the freeway when viewed from behind. A high trunk line and large triangular taillight clusters with chrome trim give the rear end a classy look.  the overall effect is pleasing. The chrome on the car contrasts nicely with the body work, especially on dark-colored models or red. Gaps between body panels seem a bit larger than those on some of the other cars in the class.  all-wheel-drive models have awd badging on the rear deck. While the 17-inch wheels that drive the awd sel models are the same design, they have a tell-tale hash mark to identify all-wheel-drive models.  the sport appearance package features a black chrome grille, color-keyed fog lights, a unique rear spoiler, chrome exhaust tips, and most notably, 18-inch aluminum wheels on lower profile tires.  the fusion fits into the ford car lineup between the compact focus and the big taurus sedan. It has much the same dimensions as its competitors. Although the fusion shares its basic floorpan with the mazda6, its wheelbase is two inches longer and it is an inch or so wider. Ford also says fusion has a stiffer bodyshell than the mazda6, which is good because a rigid structure is the key to a smooth ride and responsive handling. interiorthe cabin of the ford fusion is comfortable and benefits from straightforward controls.  the front seats manage to be slightly soft, yet supportive enough for long drives. A standard tilt and telescoping steering wheel and the six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, standard on the se and sel models, helps drivers get comfortable, be they short or tall.  in keeping with its european influence, ford has chosen to go with the soft touch for surface materials, which is expected in a luxury car but not in a mass-market car. The car we drove had a dark charcoal interior so everything was finished in black. The optional two-tone interior, especially the dark stone and camel with faux wood trim looks more inviting. The lighter colored interiors look friendlier.  the dashboard is a straightforward design that runs horizontally across the car's width with just a binnacle above the instrument pod. Decent-sized buttons make the radio and climate controls easy to operate. The center console, door pockets, and front seatback pockets provide additional storage.  se and sel models have a front passenger seatback that folds down, making it possible to haul extra-long items. Heated front seats are an option on sel models with leather seating. Fusions equipped with the new sport appearance package have red seat inserts (cloth or leather) and red stitching on the seats, steering wheel and center console.  the new sync communications and entertainment system can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players. Voice commands and/or steering wheel buttons can be used to control all functions. Head and leg room measurements don't put the fusion at the top of its class, but the back seat feels roomier than the numbers suggest.  the fusion has a good-size trunk with a flat floor and low lift-over height, making it easy to load groceries, luggage or cargo. All fusion models include a 60/40 split rear seatback, which allow.
