2004 ford mustang review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Celebrating 40 years. introductionit's time to celebrate! The ford mustang turns 40 next year. On april 17, 1964, the first mustang rolled onto the streets. Performance and style were its hallmarks and folks loved its long hood, short rear deck, and low profile.  anticipating next year’s milestone, every 2004 mustang will have 40th anniversary badges on the front fenders. They also get special exterior and interior upgrades. Wind noise has been reduced on 2004 models through the use of improved sealing, and both the v6 and v8 engines benefit from some minor refinements.  after all these years, the mustang still represents affordable performance and style. A base coupe, for example, retails for just $17,720 and cash incentives can knock a big chunk off of that. Mustang convertibles are popular and attractively priced.  mustang gt models are a hoot to drive with their 260-horsepower v8 engines. Just don't expect sophisticated ride and handling. The mach 1 returns for 2004, boasting a 310-horsepower twin-cam v8, a sports suspension, and a shaker hood designed to remind us of the famous 1969 fastback. Production of the 2004 mach 1 will be limited, however.  an all-new 2005 ford mustang is expected to go on sale in mid-2004. lineupbase models come with a v6 engine. High-performance gt models are powered by a v8. Each is available in coupe and convertible body styles. Convertibles feature a power top with a scratch-resistant glass rear window. A black semi-hard boot protects the top and gives the mustang a clean look with the top down.  every 2004 mustang will have 40th anniversary badges on the front fenders. In addition, a new 40th anniversary package, a no-cost option, adds exterior and interior upgrades to v-6 and gt models. Convertibles are available with an upgraded medium parchment soft retractable top that’s more durable and sound resistant.  the mustang coupe 17,720) and mustang convertible 23,455) come standard with a 3. 8-liter v6, an overhead-valve engine rated 190 horsepower at 5250 rpm and 220 foot-pounds of torque at 2750 rpm. Mustangs come with standard, deluxe, and premium trim packages. Deluxe 730) adds a rear spoiler, color-keyed floor mats, six-way power driver's seat, and speed control. Premium 1,385) comes with all that plus a six-way power driver's seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.  the mustang gt coupe 23,245) and mustang gt convertible 27,585) come with a 4. 6-liter v8 with single overhead cams and two-valves per cylinder rated at 260 hp at 5250 rpm and 302 lbs.-ft. Of torque at 4000 rpm. To manage all that power, gt models are equipped with gas-pressure shocks with unique model calibrations, p245/45r17 performance tires on 17-inch alloy painted wheels, a traction loc rear axle, abs and traction control. Gts come with sport bucket seats and fog lamps. The v8 mates with a tremec five-speed manual gearbox with a tall fifth gear for improved fuel economy. Mach 1 gets a sports suspension (stiffer springs, special shocks and struts, lower ride height). Distinguished by its black shaker hood, the mach 1 5,575) is treated as a package. It also comes with special 17-inch wheels, special leather-trimmed seats, special interior trim, in-dash six-disc cd stereo, and special exterior graphics.  the cobra is powered by the supercharged svt 4. 6-liter v8 from ford's special vehicle team. The svt v8 produces 390 horsepower at 6000 rpm, with 390 pounds-feet of torque at 3500 rpm. It comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Cobra comes shod with p275/40r17 tires and loaded with special interior and exterior trim.  standard safety equipment includes safety belts with pretensioners to tighten the lap belt and shoulder belts in the first moments of a crash. Energy-management retractors gradually slacken the safety belt if necessary to help reduce the force of the belt on the occupant's chest. The rear fender air intake, for example, has sharp corners and pronounced lines; but the rocker panels curve out, and the fenders have pronounced front and rear wheel well arches. The front end features wraparound complex reflector headlamps with integrated side marker lamps, combined with a square-edged honeycomb grille and a chrome pony. Tricolor front fender badges recall the good old days, as does the prominent but non-functional hood scoop. In back, it's 1965 with vertical, three-element taillamps.  gt models get unique hood and side-scoop treatments, along with fog lights and a rear spoiler.  mach 1 is easy to spot with special trim that starts with its shaker hood scoop. Attached directly to the top of the engine, the black scoop rears its head through a squarish hole in the mach 1 hood. (hood scoops on gt models sit on top of the hood.) a bold low-gloss black stripe runs up the center of the powerdome hood to accentuate the scoop. In theory, the scoop is designed to channel fresh air into the intake for increased breathing and, therefore, increased power.  the 40th anniversary package, a no-cost option for 2004 mustangs, is distinguished by arizona beige metallic performance stripes on the hood, lower rocker panels and deck lid. Arizona beige metallic accents upgraded wheels (16-inch for the v-6 and 17-inch bullitt wheels for the gt). The 40th anniversary models are available in an exclusive crimson red exterior, as well as black and oxford white, with body-colored, fold-in side mirrors. interiorthe mustang cockpit is a little quieter for 2004. New expandable foam seals designed to reduce wind noise are used around the body, particularly the outside door handles and belt moldings on both doors.  convertibles and coupes offer about the same amount of room in the front seats. Either way, it's a cozy interior. There's enough seat-track length to accommodate tall drivers and just enough elbowroom to keep from feeling cramped. Seatbelts are attached to the seat frames so they move with the seats. The package includes unique floor mats with an embroidered 40th anniversary logo and a matching badge on the center console.  the mach 1 tachometer and speedometer use a tall condensed typeface and more hash marks that make it harder to read than the gauges in the gt models. The instrument panel, center console and headliner are color-keyed. To turn on the headlights, pull out an old-fashioned knob on the left. The center console includes cup holders.  svt cobra models offer front bucket seats with nudo leather trim and suede inserts. The driver's seat features six-way power with power-adjustable thigh and side bolsters, and power lumbar support. Clearly, these seats are made for serious, fast driving. Switches are on the right-front corner of the seat. The svt instrument cluster has been redesigned to include a boost gauge. The gauges feature titanium-colored faces and electroluminescent lighting. The cobra's gearshift knob is leather-wrapped, with a brushed-aluminum insert on the top, inscribed with the six-speed pattern. Metal-trimmed pedals and dead pedal are standard.  the back seat is small, with only enough room for small objects or kids. Convertibles have even less hip and shoulder room than coupes, but about the same headroom and legroom.  the trunk is small with an even smaller opening. Coupes hold just under 11 cubic feet worth of cargo, while convertibles hold just 7. 7 cubic feet. A split fold-down rear seat is standard and handy for hauling cargo. driving impressiondriving the ford mustang confirms it is a throwback to another era. A mustang gt has more than enough power to break the rear wheels loose. The firm suspension transmitted freeway undulations, and there is some side-to-side jouncing on rough surfaces, but this car makes us feel happy.  the engine sounds so good, so deep and thunderous, it might be the most enjoyable thing about the car. 2003 chevrolet trailblazer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A trailblazing approach to the mid-size suv. introductionchevrolet trailblazer is smooth and powerful, with a stunning straight-six engine, a stiff chassis, a sophisticated suspension, powerful brakes and impressive details. It's capable of off-road travel, but feels stable and comfortable on the highway.  for 2003, the trailblazer adds an extended-wheelbase model with seating for seven, and an optional all-aluminum v8 for more towing power. The fuel tank is larger. And there's even a new north face edition with exclusive interior and exterior trim.  the v8 delivers strong torque for towing, but the six-cylinder engine delivers plenty of power for the trailblazer. Long-wheelbase trailblazers are called trailblazer ext, and stretch 16 inches longer to provide a third row of seats for seven-passenger capacity.  the base engine for all trailblazers is the vortec 4200, which was all-new for 2002. Its torque output is impressive as well, at 275 pounds-feet.  for 2003, extended-wheelbase trailblazers are available with an optional 5. 3-liter, overhead-valve v8, developing 290 horsepower and 325 pounds-feet of torque. Equipped with the v8, a two-wheel-drive trailblazer ext can tow 7,200 pounds (or 7,000 pounds with 4wd).  standard equipment on all models includes dual-stage driver and passenger airbags, which inflate with less intensity in slower crashes. Ls is available only on the short wheelbase.  lt 29,725) adds cruise control, fog lamps, a homelink transmitter, driver information center, luggage rack, heated power mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, premium-grade upholstery with eight-way power for the driver's seat, and an alarm. Lt also comes with gm's onstar security system with gps tracking and cell phone communication, including emergency assistance and remote unlocking.  ltz 33,570) is the luxury-grade trailblazer, with leather upholstery, dual power seats (and memory for the driver), automatic climate control, overhead console, and audio controls in the rear seat and on the steering wheel. Wheels and tires upgrade from 245/70r16 to 245/65r17.  the north face edition 35,615) is essentially an ltz with unique north face seats, mesh map pockets, rainsense automatic wipers, liftgate lighting, an under-floor storage cargo liner, heavy-duty floor/cargo mats, an adjustable cargo shelf with a table (ext model only) and north face duffel bags and blanket. It also sports some unique exterior identification.  the lt and north face edition are offered in extended-wheelbase form. The lt ext 31,645) and the north face ext 36,955) come with third-row seating with separate rear-seat heating and air conditioning controls. The standard final drive ratio on all trailblazers is 3. 42:1; however 3. 73 and 4. 10 ratios are available 50) for more responsive towing. (the 4. 10 ratio is not available with the v8 engine.)  options for the lt and ltz include 2wd traction control 195), running boards 375), a bose sound system 495), and a rear-seat dvd entertainment center 1000). A sliding electric sunroof costs $550 on lt and ltz, but is available on ls only as a package with onstar for $800.  . walkaroundtrailblazer's styling is fresh, yet consistent with the direction of the design of chevy trucks. The front end looks like a scaled-down suburban or silverado. The bar across the grille is chrome on the ls and lt, body-colored on the ltz. The bumper under the grille has a large opening with two vertical slats, and the optional foglights are mounted down low.  at the rear, there's a convenient and practical step in the center of the rear bumper, sort of a big functional notch. But the twin round taillights stacked over the backup light at each corner are kind of lumpy and googly eyed.  overall, trailblazer looks sturdy and neat, with confident lines that express utility. The pillars and window lines are graceful, while the headlamps and turn signals (split by the grille crossbar) are stylish. Big fender flares visually express the vehicle's boldness, and may be either body color or silver.  still, the most dramatic feature of the trailblazer may be what's under its hood: not a v6, but an all-aluminum, double-overhead-cam, 24-valve engine with variable valve timing and six cylinders lined up straight in a row.  inline sixes were once the industry norm. An old reliable straight six served as the base-level power plant in chevrolet trucks (and passenger cars) from 1929 right into the mid-1980s. Jeep still runs a straight six in the cherokee. Bmw and lexus build some of the most sophisticated sixes in the world, and both companies prefer an inline configuration. An inline six is inherently smoother than most v6s, and simpler as well; whereas a v6 takes up less space, and a 90 degree v6 can be manufactured using v8 tooling, two reasons for the soaring popularity of v6 engines in the 1980s and 90s. Now, however, thanks to advancements in electronics, metallurgy and manufacturing, the straight six is poised for a comeback.  the trailblazer's vortec 4200 is no ordinary straight six. From 4. 2 liters, it produces a stunning 275 horsepower, 35 more than ford explorer's optional 4. 6-liter overhead-cam v8. And it has a very broad torque curve, peaking at 275 pounds-feet, only 7 pounds-feet less than the ford v8, and 400 rpm sooner. The vortec also features electronic throttle control, an electrical system using silicon circuit boards (replacing some 1100 feet of copper wire), coil-on-plug ignition (thus no plug wires), and a seven-quart oil pan with a clever tunnel for the front drive axle, which allows the longish block to be mounted six inches lower, contributing to better balance and a lower center of gravity.  because the engine is so quiet and smooth at idle, a feature called 'intellistart' was added which prevents the starter from grinding if the key is turned when the engine is already running. It was the first truck for the trailblazer's chief designer, ted robertson, who. interiorstandard-wheelbase trailblazers seat five passengers. Head, hip, and leg room in the explorer's third row measure 39. 0, 45. 3, and 34. 8 inches, respectively. The corresponding numbers for the trailblazer ext are 38. 5, 45. 9, and 32. 2. Trailblazer is 2. 6 inches wider than explorer, which accounts for the additional hip room. But clearly, the explorer's independent rear suspension, and resulting low floor, allowed ford to pack more leg and head room into a significantly shorter wheelbase.  on the other hand, the long-wheelbase trailblazer does offer significantly better second-row leg and hip room than the explorer, with 37. 5 and 58. 4 inches, respectively, versus the ford's 35. 9 and 54. 2 inches. The adjustment is manual in ls and gains in trickery all the way up to eight-way power operation with memory (including outside mirror adjustment) and optional heating on. 2007 mercury milan review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Solid midsize sedan, available with all-wheel drive. introductionthe 2007 mercury milan drives well and is the product of some of ford's best engineering. Milan is based on the superb mazda 6 platform and shares much in common with the ford fusion. The cabin is inviting, with nice interior materials and better than average detailing. We liked the contrast stitching in the seats. Also, it's an easy car to use. Fold-down rear seats add an extra measure of space and utility. The v6 gets an epa-rated 28 mpg on the highway and comes with a six-speed automatic transmission, a rarity in this class, which gives both better acceleration and better fuel economy than a five-speed automatic.  for 2007, mercury has added two all-wheel-drive models to the lineup: milan v6 awd and milan premier v6 awd. Traction control is standard on all v6 milan models in 2007. walkaroundthe mercury milan looks crisp and new. It looks like it belongs to a completely different family of cars than the ford fusion, thanks to major changes to the roof, side glass, headlamps, grille and taillamps. The doors are the only shared body panels between milan, fusion, mazda 6, and lincoln mkz.  the traditional mercury waterfall grille, as opposed to the ford fusion three-bar grille, is surrounded by more conventional combination headlamp units (versus the ford version's trapezoidal headlamps).  out back, the high decklid is framed by a pair of bright led taillamps that look like they came from a japanese or german car, large and nicely integrated. The side view is pumped up several notches on the premier version with its 14-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels and relatively fat 225/50r17 tires.  three color choices are available in 2007 for milan: silver birch, dark amethyst and alloy. In addition, a rear spoiler is available to rev up the appearance factor. interiorthe mercury milan cabin is quite tasty. We felt more like we were sitting in them than on them.  the rear seat folds down in 60/40 fashion, enabled by an easy-pull latch on each side, to eliminate leaning over the decklid opening and fumbling for seatback latches. The interior is roomy enough for a 6-foot, 4-inch passenger to sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver, with real headroom. The rear door panels are scooped out for more elbow room. A fold-down front passenger seat is standard on all 2007 milan models, adding to the vehicle's versatility.  storage cubbies are all over the place, two in the console, one quite large one at the top center of the dash with a latching lid, two more in each front door pocket hollowed out to take a big gulp cup, and one in the bottom center of the dashboard, all of which add up to convenience and ease. High-speed handling showed predictable, normal and usual levels of understeer.  the ride, over the universally awful streets of detroit, was quite good, with lots of compliance to soak up bumps, not too much body roll, and quiet, smooth operation.  the brakes, on the other hand, were strong and direct, without a lot of wasted pedal travel before deceleration starts to happen, and low effort-to-stop ratio. summarythe mercury milan is a thoroughly nice family car and we think it's an excellent choice in its price range. From the waterfall grille up front to the brushed metallic trim all over the interior, this is a ford platform upgraded to mercury status, with more standard equipment and more soul than the ford version, the fusion.  newcartestdrive. The mercury milan is a midsize sedan that shares much in common with the ford fusion and was based off the mazda6 platform. It is mercury's entry-level car. The milan premier comes with a 221-horsepower 3. 0-liter v6, a six-speed automatic, anti-lock brakes, and 17-inch machined aluminum wheels. Leather seating surfaces, the premium six-disc cd changer with mp3 and six speakers also come standard. For 2007, the mercury milan adds more standard features such as: all-wheel drive, side-impact airbags, and side curtain airbags.
