2007 chevrolet equinox review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Improved interior, more safety features. introductiona solstice, not an equinox, is an event to celebrate. An equinox is by comparison a non-event, when light and dark are equal, when everything is just alright. the chevrolet equinox may not represent the return of the sun, either, but it should be considerably brighter for '07, thanks to a bounty of improvements that really are worth celebrating. Instruments and controls are largely new, and the chassis settings revised for better ride and handling. New options include upgraded audio systems, a remote starter, and at last a navigation system integrated into the stereo. these are welcome changes because we have not been enthralled with the equinox cabin. equinox is chevrolet's answer to the ford escape, honda cr-v and toyota rav4. But equinox is bigger and roomier than any of these competitors, and has features that enhance its versatility. The rear seatbacks also recline for additional comfort. It's nearly 14 inches longer than ford escape and just three inches shorter than a chevy trailblazer. Its long wheelbase gives the equinox good stability and ride quality. However, equinox seats only five, because it does not offer a hopelessly cramped third row, as does the toyota rav4. Like escape, cr-v and rav4, the equinox is based on a passenger-car design but has an interior like a traditional suv. Therefore, industry observers and other car crazies call the equinox a crossover utility because it crosses over the line from truck to car. lineupthe 2007 chevy equinox comes in two trim levels: the basic ls and the better-appointed lt. Both are available with front-wheel drive (fwd) or all-wheel drive (awd). All models come with a 3. 4-liter v6 and five-speed automatic transmission. equinox ls fwd 22,180) and awd 23,680) come with air conditioning; cruise control; tilt steering; cloth upholstery; a fold-flat front passenger seat; a multi-flex 60/40 split rear bench seat that folds, slides, and reclines; six-speaker am/fm/cd audio; and power windows, mirrors, and locks with remote keyless entry. Tires are bridgestone p235/65 all-season radials on 16-inch steel wheels. Added as standard on '07 models are a driver information center and new safety features. Options for the ls include an upgraded audio system with mp3 capability 135), onstar communications 1,045), deep-tinted glass 275), and a tow package 350). An engine block heater 50) and carpeted floor mats 40) are also available. lt fwd 22,970) and awd 24,470) add fog lights, carpeted floor mats, deep tinted glass, and 16-inch aluminum wheels. Mirrors, door handles, and roof-rack side rails are body-color rather than charcoal or black. Optional side-impact and head-curtain airbags 395) come with a rollover sensor, so they can provide head and torso protection in a rollover as well as a side impact. walkaroundthe 2007 chevy equinox is aerodynamically smoother, thanks to a subtle re-shaping of front and rear fascias as well as the rear spoiler. From the front, equinox still looks the part of a chevy truck, with its requisite single-bar grille sporting a large gold chevrolet bow-tie emblem. But the black mask overlapping the front bumper has shrunken and retreated, which we find a subtle but worthwhile aesthetic improvement. it's harder to see the difference in the rear spoiler. And in side view, equinox looks pretty much the same as before. That's good, because we've liked equinox from that angle since it debuted for '05. in that broadside view, equinox looks quite a bit different from the rest of the chevy truck family. The roof pillars and the sheetmetal above the windows but below the roof seem to be extra-thick, imparting a feeling of extra solidity and strength, important for a truck made on a car platform. Equinox is based on a car-type platform, with unit-body construction rather than body on frame for better ride and handling. interiorinside, where the people live, work and ride, is where the chevy equinox shines when compared to some of its competitors. Up front, equinox carries flexible net storage pockets on both sides of the center tunnel. The center console/armrest has a small storage cubby and a coin holder for toll money. Dual cupholders pop out of the end of it, but they're flimsy and get in the way of the handbrake. The armrest flips up, providing better access to an open floor console that's a perfect place for a purse, briefcase or tote bag. The floor-mounted cupholder works well, while slots farther to the rear holds cds angled forward for easy selection. the equinox cabin is a clean and functional design. That said, some of the materials and control interfaces we found inside last year's equinox seemed to us less than bright. Window switches are now lighted. Also new for '07 is a standard driver information center that includes more than 20 personalization and vehicle information features, such as trip odometer, fuel range, outside temperature display and door locking programs. the rear seat rides on a track that allows it to slide back and forth up to eight inches, to bring kids or briefcases closer to the front, or to provide extra legroom for tall second-row passengers. With the rear seat full forward, there's 35. 7 cubic feet of cargo space behind it. Gm calls this innovative feature the multi-flex rear seat. because the rear seatback is split 60/40, equinox can transport two rear passengers along with long cargo items. The front passenger seat folds flat, further extending cargo room length. When folded, the hard front seatback can be used as a table or desktop. Rear passengers also enjoy a 12-volt power outlet and, new for '07, a fold-down center armrest with two additional cupholders. Rear head restraints were downscaled last year, improving rearward visibility for the driver. driving impressionchevrolet's 3. 4-liter unit is an old pushrod-overhead-valve design that lacks modern features such as variable valve timing and variable-length intake runners (although it does feature hydraulic roller lifters, just like a corvette). It feels strained when pushed at high rpm. Still, equinox delivers good acceleration under most circumstances, and it's smooth enough. Epa fuel economy estimates are improved somewhat for '07, at 19/26 mpg city/highway for front-drive models and 18/25 for the awd version. the v6 engine is aided considerably by the five-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet says the equinox can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 8. 5 seconds, which should be adequate performance for most families. And while it may not excel at acceleration, equinox is rated to pull a 3500-pound trailer, the same as the more powerful escape and rav4 v6s. its long wheelbase and 3800-pound heft give the equinox a decent ride, making it a suitable companion for long trips. Its handling is responsive and it's easy to modulate the brakes for smooth stops. the equinox has good road feel in highway driving, yet steering effort is low at low speeds for easier maneuvering in tight parking lots. The steering ratio is variable, and the equinox uses electric, rather than hydraulic, power steering. We don't think the average driver will feel the difference between this system and more conventional hydraulics, and that's a good thing. Unlike a hydraulic servo, the electric booster doesn't use engine power, resulting in slightly better fuel economy. stabilitrak electronic stability control helps drivers maintain c.

A trailblazing approach to the mid-size suv. introductionchevrolet trailblazer is smooth and powerful, with a stunning straight-six engine, a stiff chassis, a sophisticated suspension, powerful brakes and impressive details. It's capable of off-road travel, but feels stable and comfortable on the highway. for 2003, the trailblazer adds an extended-wheelbase model with seating for seven, and an optional all-aluminum v8 for more towing power. The fuel tank is larger. And there's even a new north face edition with exclusive interior and exterior trim. the v8 delivers strong torque for towing, but the six-cylinder engine delivers plenty of power for the trailblazer. Long-wheelbase trailblazers are called trailblazer ext, and stretch 16 inches longer to provide a third row of seats for seven-passenger capacity. the base engine for all trailblazers is the vortec 4200, which was all-new for 2002. Its torque output is impressive as well, at 275 pounds-feet. for 2003, extended-wheelbase trailblazers are available with an optional 5. 3-liter, overhead-valve v8, developing 290 horsepower and 325 pounds-feet of torque. Equipped with the v8, a two-wheel-drive trailblazer ext can tow 7,200 pounds (or 7,000 pounds with 4wd). standard equipment on all models includes dual-stage driver and passenger airbags, which inflate with less intensity in slower crashes. Ls is available only on the short wheelbase. lt 29,725) adds cruise control, fog lamps, a homelink transmitter, driver information center, luggage rack, heated power mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, premium-grade upholstery with eight-way power for the driver's seat, and an alarm. A sliding electric sunroof costs $550 on lt and ltz, but is available on ls only as a package with onstar for $800. . walkaroundtrailblazer's styling is fresh, yet consistent with the direction of the design of chevy trucks. The front end looks like a scaled-down suburban or silverado. The bar across the grille is chrome on the ls and lt, body-colored on the ltz. The bumper under the grille has a large opening with two vertical slats, and the optional foglights are mounted down low. at the rear, there's a convenient and practical step in the center of the rear bumper, sort of a big functional notch. But the twin round taillights stacked over the backup light at each corner are kind of lumpy and googly eyed. overall, trailblazer looks sturdy and neat, with confident lines that express utility. The pillars and window lines are graceful, while the headlamps and turn signals (split by the grille crossbar) are stylish. Big fender flares visually express the vehicle's boldness, and may be either body color or silver. still, the most dramatic feature of the trailblazer may be what's under its hood: not a v6, but an all-aluminum, double-overhead-cam, 24-valve engine with variable valve timing and six cylinders lined up straight in a row. inline sixes were once the industry norm. An old reliable straight six served as the base-level power plant in chevrolet trucks (and passenger cars) from 1929 right into the mid-1980s. Jeep still runs a straight six in the cherokee. Bmw and lexus build some of the most sophisticated sixes in the world, and both companies prefer an inline configuration. An inline six is inherently smoother than most v6s, and simpler as well; whereas a v6 takes up less space, and a 90 degree v6 can be manufactured using v8 tooling, two reasons for the soaring popularity of v6 engines in the 1980s and 90s. Now, however, thanks to advancements in electronics, metallurgy and manufacturing, the straight six is poised for a comeback. the trailblazer's vortec 4200 is no ordinary straight six. From 4. 2 liters, it produces a stunning 275 horsepower, 35 more than ford explorer's optional 4. 6-liter overhead-cam v8. And it has a very broad torque curve, peaking at 275 pounds-feet, only 7 pounds-feet less than the ford v8, and 400 rpm sooner. The vortec also features electronic throttle control, an electrical system using silicon circuit boards (replacing some 1100 feet of copper wire), coil-on-plug ignition (thus no plug wires), and a seven-quart oil pan with a clever tunnel for the front drive axle, which allows the longish block to be mounted six inches lower, contributing to better balance and a lower center of gravity. because the engine is so quiet and smooth at idle, a feature called 'intellistart' was added which prevents the starter from grinding if the key is turned when the engine is already running. It was the first truck for the trailblazer's chief designer, ted robertson, who. interiorstandard-wheelbase trailblazers seat five passengers. Head, hip, and leg room in the explorer's third row measure 39. 0, 45. 3, and 34. 8 inches, respectively. The corresponding numbers for the trailblazer ext are 38. 5, 45. 9, and 32. 2. Trailblazer is 2. 6 inches wider than explorer, which accounts for the additional hip room. But clearly, the explorer's independent rear suspension, and resulting low floor, allowed ford to pack more leg and head room into a significantly shorter wheelbase. on the other hand, the long-wheelbase trailblazer does offer significantly better second-row leg and hip room than the explorer, with 37. 5 and 58. 4 inches, respectively, versus the ford's 35. 9 and 54. 2 inches. The adjustment is manual in ls and gains in trickery all the way up to eight-way power operation with memory (including outside mirror adjustment) and optional heating on.
